Golden Ratio and Pattern
Ancient Greek mathematicians were the first to come up with the principles of the golden ration; this was because it presented frequent appearances in the study of geometry. They used the concepts of the golden ratio to explain the relationship between two distinct quantities. With time, the school of thought of the golden ratio got to be adopted by many other individuals including the engineers, musicians and artists. They were able to incorporate the concepts in their works in terms of geometric proportion and dimension to achieve the desired results. For example, they argued that the isosceles triangles that make up a pentagram corners each have the unique properties of having the ratio of the longer side to the shorter side being consistent to the golden ratio. Similarly, in an apple, the seeds arrangement depicts a star pattern in a pointed fashion, thus a natural occurrence of the golden ratio (Werness 78).
Research further reveals that the concepts of the golden ratio helped influence the ancient works of painting. A famous philosopher, Agrippa Heinrich drew a pentagram and a man inside the circle, depicting an application of the golden ratio. Additionally, the illustrations by Leonardo da Vinci of polyhedral in regard to the divine proportion and his thoughts that most bodily proportions are in consistent with the golden ratio made most scholars speculate that he made use of the concepts of the golden ratio in his artistic works. However, the implication that his painting; the Mona Lisa employed the golden ratio ideology has not yet been fully confirmed.
I put Golden Ratio into my artwork. For example, the red line and the revolving step. I used these to represent the change of the history, because the history is changing me all the time. For example: I have learned a lot of traditional elements in art history, I studied aesthetics, composition of a picture, structure, etc. And then I created a specific way to represent this topic through my understanding to the history and my research. Also, my artwork shows a lot of history messages, this is the interaction between me and the history. And I learned a lot valuable things about the feedback from the art history. It is not only the definition of morality. I used my own decision to decide the correct things, and then redefine these things, create more elements in my work, and tell a specific event or judge this specific event.
The petal shaped pattern with red associate with blue is from Chinese history, a distortion from the elements of Beijing Opera. Through the history, a few traditional patterns have been kept a lot but not with the original color. These patterns have no meanings in modern era, they only contain the representation of the history. So i redefined and recolored, to change this pattern, to make this pattern has a specific meaning in modern era. Also, i used golden ratio to define the size of this petal, so I made this petal into perspective, walking from a dark place to a bright place. For every changes of every pattern, I have a very strict design plan of the size, and there is no color repeated. We can see very clear color changes through the revolving step and the petal.
Connect Golden Ratio with the artist work of the patterns is very valuable in modern era. Personal explanation, creation must build on a very penetrating research through the history. We need to learn more about traditional art, more than only art history. And the composition of a picture and the uses for the perspectivity really effect the artist work. Use mixed color and steady texture can make the picture looks more comfortable, and even can let people feel the drawer's feeling. Next step, I will design and search more patterns and ways of color changing. There will be a lot of work to do, but also, they will be fun.

"Historical Process". 48in X 48in, Acrylic on canvas, 2015.

  • This work about the process of history, because history is changed by my activity, and  I make the history for further. My work also get the pattern from the history and put the new element in the old subject. Also I create a relationship between Golden Ration (red line, and revolving "step") and vivid color.
  • Those pattern from the old Chinese history, and it has not color on surface, I put the new color in the old subject (Golden Ration, Pattern), it likes a redefinition.
  • When I view this painting, I can feel the outside of the painting, the light space in the center going to the dark space, this is a thing that I create a interaction for the audience.

Artist:Frank Big Bear

His work full up the dramatic figures in wild and capricious scenes, and his painting has very powerful balance that warm and cold color are half and half. Also he paints some vivid patterns that those patterns from history, he uses redefinition for patterns, and then put the new ideas and new phenomenon in the patterns.

For my work, the red lines is golden ration, and this work express the process of historical change.  I studied various information from history, and I give feedback for history. Also I make the history for further, and history is changed by my activity. It is a interaction, the values is I learn a lot from history, not just moral things. (Morals expresses the right things, values are not about right or wrong things.) Whatever I just keep the “right things” (the golden ratio) and then create more difference and innovation. Furthermore, I think a lot of painting student are losing the “right things”, they are pursue the open ideas, and they want find a new way to express the painting. Also mostly student just talk a lot of academic topic for their presentation, but I can not find those information in their paintings. So if I want create new painting, I must study art of traditional painting, and then to do the innovative work. Just personal idea.

My work also get the pattern from the history and put the new element in the old subject. The difference is about expression, my painting is regular composition, and about a lot of different spaces of overlap, the different two marks has relationship between pigment and shade. For Frank Big Bear’s work, mostly he uses composition of portraiture, and individual pigment has independent space, for example, he paints shade of single space at inside, so it likes individual emotion.

Golden ratio & Symbolism

My research paper:

A famous philosopher, Agrippa Heinrich drew a pentagram and a man inside the circle, depicting an application of the golden ratio (See fig.1).

For Symbolism in relation to the inspiring paints of ancient history, the symbolism concepts appeared as a revival of the mystical tendencies adopted by the Roman tradition. Symbolism to a great extent depicts a reaction against realism and naturalism. Where the naturalists and realists sought to focus on optical reality in their objectivity rather than what was considered ideal, implying that symbolists sought more insight within their dreams and imagination. A common feature of the symbolic paintings included the dream imagery and the mythological phenomenon’s, entailing intensely personal, obscure, private and ambiguous references.

Painting project

This painting is focusing on using symbol’s, patterns and to relate them to the subject of history. Because the pattern came from the old Chinese Ombres Chinoises, and my goal is to express the "social phenomenon" (how the historical things changed individually or how the history effect individually) which has taken place or character many happen in the further.

Also, I researched Golden Ratio for this painting, personally Golden Ration is very necessary element for the visual aesthetics, also this can create more symbolic things for the subject.

Research: Marcel Duchamp - The Green + White Box

GB+WB- no painter's touch in paintings. (but much painter's touch  in GB)

The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Green Box), September 1934.

Green Box (regular edition), 1934
 (edition of 300 copies)

Green Box (deluxe edition), 1934
 (edition of 20 copies)

In the Infinitive (A l'Infinitif)  (The White Box), 1967

Detail:

"The Green Box is a selection from a great many nots - Duchamp said that its purpose it to act as an 'ideal catalogue' for the Large Glass. More than a catalogue, it is a commentary and a manual, a key, a map, and an intruction book." - Richard Hamilton

This is a great way to narrative the subject, but it is partial to the Publication,  i will research more about painting. And anyone can give me some suggest about artist or art work? Thanks!

5 January - 11 January, HUMN 311

My research for this class will be about Narrative and Symbol Based.

Early, I researched pattern of historical fashion and building before two year, I went to various old historical places in China. Also I learned historical background, and then I thought a lot about how to relate the historical information and my painting style. The Chinese Ombres Chinoises has influenced me most in my painting style.

An example of my painting project:

“New Pattern”. 30”*36”, Acrylic on canvas, 2014.
This work about the redefinition of an subject. I researched patterns from old history and buildings, and put the new elements into the re-composition, and  coloring for my painting. The goal is to express the social phenomenon which has taken place or char many happen in the further.

Other example of my painting project:

“The Phenomenon of Evolution”. 48”*60”, Acrylic on canvas, 2014.

This painting is focusing on using symbol’s, patterns and to relate them to the subject of history and ritual culture. The pattern looks like a “flake” that and for me represents the passing of history, The contour line is a symbol of geologic maps represents the diversity of nature land we live in. The center is a symbol of a historical scene about ritual culture. These three spaces impact each other and together as a stage performing the civilize history and land and now they effect each other, and link tightly.

For next, I will research more information about culture and symbol from old building (Rome, Greece, China...) and old fashion (clothes, symbolic artist book...), and research how to create a relationship between narrative (some specific things) and symbol (the elements from a specific period), and to create my own pattern by my research.
